World Cup: Croatia proved the winner after penalty shootout to determine the last semifinalists for the Russia 2018 World Cup with Ivan Rakitic scoring the winning kick to help Croatia advance into the semi-finals.
Croatia defender Domagoj Vida would be have been the hero for the night when he headed home the winning goal from a corner kick in the first half of extra time to put Croatia ahead 2-1. But the hosts Russia refused to give up and equalized in the second half of extra time to make scores 2-2 and go into penalty shootout.
It was a cagey affair that eventually went into extra time between the Croatia and Russia to determine the last semi-finalists for this year’s Mundial.
Andrej Kramaric’s header for Croatia cancelled out a stunning strike from Russia’s Denis Cheryshev to leave the teams level at 1-1 at halftime in the last World Cup quarter-final at Sochi’s Fisht Stadium on Saturday.
Cheryshev’s swerving left-footer from the edge of the box gave hosts Russia the lead in the 31st minute but an unmarked Kramaric headed in a cross from Mario Mandzukic eight minutes later to restore parity.
But the game went into extra time after scores remained 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes and the five added minutes.
In the first half of extra time, Damagoj Vida gave Croatia the lead through a header.
The Croatia will play England in the semi-finals at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Wednesday.
