Chief Gabriel Ofotokun former interim President General of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) has urged the Urhobo nation to have respect for the union, and speak with one voice in support for the current executive; led by Olorogun (Dr.) Moses Taiga.
Speaking in Sapele, Ofotokun posited that the call became necessary in view of Urhobo unity and the developmental agenda of the President-General fort the Urhobo nation particularly in the areas of Mukoro Mowoe University and micro-finance bank.
“With this, there is need for Urhobo nation to come together, support Olorogun Moses Taiga and speak with one voice because UPU is not a political party.
“Those who have tried to make money by making people to believe that they, can get Urhobo nation into their pockets to deliver, have serious punishment from God. They have serious punishment from God because that is not what God wants for Urhobo,” he stated.
Ofotokun said that Urhobo must speak with one voice as a united family to play their role as a leader in the country. “Hausa/Fulani, in terms population are number one, Yoruba is number two while Ibo comes third.
From population census, Urhobos are number four but Ijaws have gathered themselves up through the coastal area of Nigeria and now saying that they are more than us.
They have used style to push Urhobo to number five. Even, at number five, are we getting our dues as the fifth largest ethnics group in Nigeria? We are not because Urhobo? is not speaking with one voice. “The mouth piece of the Urhobo people, like Arewa Afenifere and Ohaneze Ndigbo, is the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU).
Therefore, nobody should contradict it. Let us respect and honour UPU so that people will respect and honour us as a people,” he advised.
